Soils contain more carbon than the atmosphere and plant biomass combined. Nearly one-third of the world’s biodiversity lives in soils, and more than 70% of economic activity in Europe depends on biodiversity. Soil conservation and restoration have become a strategic issue for businesses and regions. Land sealing, erosion, biodiversity loss, and land scarcity—soils present major environmental, economic, and regulatory challenges. How can we better understand their role? How can we restore degraded soils?
